FAQs About Batteries

What are mistakes made when jump starting a car?

Mixing up negative and positive cables is the most common mistake. When you mix up the negative and positive cable it ruins your car’s alternator. Just remember black to negative and red to positive. Other common mistakes are using cheap cables that don’t conduct properly, letting the cables swing and become detached, touching the clips together, and ignoring cracks in your battery or dirty battery terminals.

What should I be careful of when changing a car battery?

It may sound obvious, but be sure that you do not drop the battery. Be careful not to let the tools touch both the negative and positive terminals simultaneously, as it could create a spark, cause the battery to short out, or even damage the vehicle’s electrical components.

Make sure to separate the cables to the side so that they don’t touch the battery until it is in place. Attach the negative cable first and then the positive cable. If have any doubts while you are trying to change your battery you should always call in an expert.

How do I replace my car battery without losing car memory?

Use a car memory saver or other secondary power source. If you don’t own a car memory saver, come to Kelowna Auto Care and we can do this process for you. First, make sure to turn off your car before you unplug the battery. Next, plug the car memory saver into the cigarette lighter or the OBD2 connector. Remove the old battery and install the new battery and attach the connectors. Finally, unplug the memory saver from the car.

Why is my engine stalling after replacing my car battery?

If your car lost battery power completely then your car’s computer system may have lost valuable information to regulate engine performance causing it to stall even after you replace the battery.

However, the car’s system will quickly collect new data and engine performance should return to normal. In some case you may need to have the throttle body, or your idle air control valve cleaned out as carbon deposits can build up inside these parts, pushing them beyond the computer’s ability to regulate engine performance.

FAQs About Vehicle Starting Issues

How do I unlock my steering wheel?

Place your foot on the brake and turn the wheel in the direction in which it has a little range of motion. This should ease the tension in the steering column and allow you to turn the key. Turning the key unlocks the steering wheel. Do not try to unlock your steering wheel without a key or if the battery is dead. This should only be done by a professional auto repair technician, visit Kelowna Auto Care located at #7-495 Banks Rd, Kelowna, BC.

How do I change my keyless entry remote battery?

This should work for most remotes:

  1. Remove the metal blade key from the remote.
  2. Use a standard (flat head) screwdriver to gently pry open the fob.
  3. Remove the battery. It is usually a small round lithium watch battery.
  4. Insert a new battery.
  5. Snap the key fob back together.
  6. Insert the metal blade key into the fob.

What does a dead starter sound like?

Clicking noises upon turning the key are a classic sign of starter failure. However, this isn’t the only clue. A dying starter might remain completely silent or offer subtle warnings through whirring or grinding sounds before finally giving up the ghost.

Why won’t my car start?

The most common reason why a car will not start is a bad or dead battery. However, there are several other possibilities too. If you are having trouble getting your vehicle started, give Kelowna Auto Care a call at 250-860-8370. Our auto repair professionals will try to help you diagnose the issue, which could be one of these problems:

  • Failing alternator
  • Starter motor
  • Ignition switch malfunction
  • Bad spark plugs
  • Cracked distributor cap
  • Broken timing belt

FAQs About Headlights

What are the 3 situations where headlights are required?

  1. You should make sure both of your headlights are in good working order before driving your car. Headlights must be in use from sunset to sunrise.
  2. Headlights are also necessary when you cannot see more than 400 feet in front of you. You should also use your car’s headlights whenever windshield wipers are in use.
  3. Some studies have shown that when drivers elect to always drive with their headlights on it can reduce automobile accidents.

Do parking lights and turn signals use the same bulb?

Yes, your car uses the same bulb for the front turn signal and parking lights. Side bulbs are located on the inside of the wheel wells. All lights on your car will eventually burn out and need to be replaced.

FAQs About Automotive Diagnostics

How do vehicle diagnostic systems work?

OBD stands for On-Board Diagnostics and is a sophisticated computer that collects vital information from a network of sensors, monitoring engine performance, emissions, and other key functions. It not only regulates various car systems but also acts as a diagnostic tool, alerting you to potential problems before they become major issues.

How long does a car diagnostic last?

While a basic diagnostic test typically wraps up in 1-1.5 hours, complex issues demanding further examination and component access/testing can extend the process to 2-3 hours. The length ultimately depends on the severity of the problem and the potential presence of multiple underlying culprits.

What is included in a car diagnostic test?

Diagnostic tests are like X-rays for your vehicle, utilizing specialized equipment to scan its complex systems and components like the engine, transmission, and throttle. From minor oil tank issues to intricate electrical glitches, these tests diagnose a wide range of potential problems. However, interpreting the data they generate requires trained professionals, making dealer shops and skilled mechanics your best bet for accurate diagnoses.

Belts
A fan belt, also known as a drive belt, is a belt connecting your car’s engine to the front mounted accessories. The fan belt rotates the water pump and engine fan, which maintains a cool environment for the engine and its components. Sooner or later, your vehicle’s fan belts will dry out and crack. When you are ready for a replacement you can count on Kelowna Auto Care for all your vehicle’s repair needs.

You not only have to get the belts replaced with quality ones, but you should have the work done by experts. To have the belts replaced by auto cooling and heating experts – and get your car driving right – visit Kelowna Auto Care today. The mechanics at Kelowna Auto Care will thoroughly inspect your car’s belts; replace all worn belts; and adjust the installed belts.

Coolant System Flush
A car’s coolant system transfers excess heat from one part of the engine and finally loses it through the radiator fins. With time, the coolant becomes old and dirty. The old coolant will negatively impact the system’s performance. To make sure the system is working effectively, consider having a regular coolant system flush. A coolant flush is basic maintenance for your car’s cooling system. Call 250-860-8370 or visit Kelowna Auto Care for all your coolant system flush and fill needs.

Hoses
Hoses transfer coolant and antifreeze throughout the engine’s cooling system (including the radiator). Sooner or later, your vehicle’s hoses will dry out and crack. When you are ready for a replacement you can count on Kelowna Auto Care for all your vehicle’s repair needs.

You not only have to get the hoses replaced with quality ones, but you should have the work done by experts. To have the hoses replaced by auto cooling and heating experts – and get your car driving right – visit Kelowna Auto Care today. The mechanics at Kelowna Auto Care will thoroughly inspect your car’s hoses; replace all worn hoses; and adjust the installed hoses.

Radiator Flush
A radiator is the part of your vehicle that keeps the engine cool and protects it from excessive heating. To be cool, the radiator needs to remain clean – always. With time, sludge, rust and other solid deposits build up inside your car’s radiator. These make the cooling system become clogged and less effective. This in effect hurts your vehicle’s performance. A regular radiator flush is enough to keep the system in shape. For this reason, make radiator flushing a part of your routine car maintenance schedule. For all your radiator flush needs, call 250-860-8370 or visit Kelowna Auto Care today.

Radiators
Radiators are heat exchangers for cooling your car’s internal combustion engine. A radiator cools the engine by circulating an engine coolant through the engine block – it then loses the heat to the atmosphere through radiation. A radiator has a set of tubes through which the engine coolant flows. Fins surround these tubes. When the radiator fails, the excess heat produced by the engine could damage the engine components. To prevent this from happening, have your radiator serviced regularly. When one fails, sometimes it can be repaired, come visit us to have your radiator needs handled by experts, visit Kelowna Auto Care today.

FAQs About Coolant

What is causing my coolant light to come on?

If the dashboard light is red, indicating your car is overheating then you should pull over as soon as it is safe to do so and switch off the engine. If the coolant level is low or there is another problem with your cooling system, you could cause serious damage by continuing to drive.

When should I do a coolant flush?

Your vehicle’s owner’s manual will recommend getting the coolant flushed about every 50,000 kilometers or three to five years, whichever comes first. Make sure to consult your owner’s manual as some outline a more specific interval depending on the vehicle’s make and model and your driving habits.

Why is my coolant leaking?

Corrosion within the radiator is the leading cause of a coolant leak. As the radiator tubes get older and weaker, sediment or debris collects inside and causes a leak. The sealing gasket between the tank and the radiator can also wear out, and lead to a leak.

How do I know what coolant I should use?

Your car’s owner’s manual provides a wealth of information. Follow the recommendations in your car’s owner’s manual to the letter unless otherwise recommended by the manufacturer or auto repair professionals. It will tell you what type of coolant is best to use in your vehicle. If you don’t have a copy of your owner’s manual, you can most likely find the information you need on the manufacturer’s website.

FAQs About Radiators

When should the radiator in my car be replaced?

Often, radiators will last for the entire life of a car. On average a radiator lasts 8 to 10 years. However, there are a few factors that can reduce a radiator’s working life such as improper maintenance, driving habits and environmental conditions.

What does radiator service include?

Radiator service starts with draining the system. Then we flush the radiator and engine block, inspecting all hoses to make sure they’re not cracked. Next, we refill the radiator with fresh coolant and finish by pressure testing the radiator cap and cooling system.

What is causing my engine to overheat?

The most common reason a car overheats is a lack of coolant or a coolant leak. However, if you have an older vehicle, it may also indicate that it is time to replace your radiator, thermostat, water pump or heater core. If it continues to be a problem that you can’t fix, your best bet is to bring it to our shop in Long Island City.

What is the average lifespan of a radiator?

While radiators usually last 8-10 years, some factors can shorten their lifespan. Watch for signs of deterioration to know when replacement is needed.

When it is time for a lube, oil, or filter change, take your vehicle to Kelowna Auto Care located at #7-495 Banks Rd, Kelowna, BC.

FAQs About Squeaks, Squeals, & Rattles

Why do my brakes squeak?

The most common reason brakes squeak is that they are worn out. The squeak is the sound of the metal wear indicator on the brake pad coming in contact with the metal rotor. Your brakes are the top safety feature on your vehicle, so come by Kelowna Auto Care and get them replaced right away. If you hear a squeaking only when you press the brake pedal the first 2-3 times when you first start driving in the morning it is the result of overnight moisture build up and likely nothing to worry about.

Why is my car making a squealing noise?

It may be a slipping fan belt. Listen for a few warning signs such as a squeaking or chirping noise. Those noises are usually caused by misalignment of the belt and the pulley. If you come by Kelowna Auto Care in Kelowna, BC our professional auto repair technicians can realign it to stop the noise and fix it before your fan belt completely breaks.

Can engine rattling be fixed?

Yes. Many engine rattles can be fixed quickly and affordably. The most common reason for engine rattling is a collapsed valve lifter. This needs to be repaired quickly or it can cause misfires. Other common causes that need immediate attention are a failing tensioner belt, drive belt or low oil pressure. If the rattle is intermittent, it may be a poor connection between the rod and the crankshaft.

If the noise is loud, it may be a cracked flex plate or rusted heat shield. Higher mileage vehicles may have an engine rattle resulting from an engine hotspot ping, piston slap or degrading sound dampening features such as engine insulation. Sometime what sounds like an engine rattle is not the engine at all but a cracked catalytic converter.

Why does my car make a noise when I turn the steering wheel?

If your car makes strange sounds or clicks when you turn the steering wheel the most common cause is a low steering fluid. Over time the steering fluid decreases and air enters the steering mechanism causing unwanted noises. Come to Kelowna Auto Care to top off your fluid reservoir with power steering fluid. The noises should start to go away immediately. If the sound returns quickly your car could be leaking steering fluid. Our professionals in Kelowna, BC can help you diagnose and repair leaks quickly and affordably.

Why does my car squeal when I start it in the morning?

A worn out cambelt (also known as a timing belt) will create a loud noise when you start your car’s engine. The noise could range from squealing to hissing or rumbling. This is the sound of a cambelt that is about to break. If a cambelt breaks it can ruin your car’s engine. Come to Kelowna Auto Care and get it replaced right away.

Why are my wheels making a chirping sound when I accelerate?

The most common reason why your car’s wheels make a chirping or squealing sound, especially during acceleration is a bad wheel bearing. If you notice a grinding or grating noise coming from your wheel this can also be the sound of a wheel bearing beginning to fail. If you are in Kelowna, West Kelowna, Lake Country or the surrounding area, come by Kelowna Auto Care and we can diagnose the problem quickly.

FAQs About Windshield Wipers

Why are my windshield wipers not working?

If your windshield wiper won’t turn on the most common reason is a blown fuse. Come by Kelowna Auto Care and we can replace the fuse quickly and affordably. Other reasons windshield wipers may fail are electrical faults in the control arm, or wiper motor. If your windshield wipers are failing to wipe away water the most likely cause is torn or worn-out wiper blades. Wiper blades are made of rubber and need to be replaced frequently.

How much does it cost to replace windshield wipers?

The average cost for a windshield wiper blade replacement is between $40 and $80 including parts and labor. Come by Kelowna Auto Care and we can replace your windshield wipers quickly and affordably.

Can I replace just one windshield wiper blade or does it have to be both?

If one windshield wiper blade is worn out and failing the other is like to fail soon too. Windshield wiper blades are usually sold individually so you can replace just the one, but it is usually more cost effective to replace both at the same time. If you have front and rear wiper blades on your vehicle, replace the fronts at the same time and the rear as needed.

FAQs About Leaking Fluids

Why is water leaking on my foot on the driver’s side?

The most common cause is a blocked air conditioning drain hose. This is a simple repair at Kelowna Auto Care. There are other possible causes of water dripping on your foot on the driver’s side of the car including a broken door seal or leaking heat exchanger.

What should I do if my car creates a small oil leak on my driveway?

If the spill is still wet, cover the stain with clay cat litter, sand, cornmeal, cornstarch or baking soda. This will help absorb the oil before it soaks into the cement or asphalt. Once the spill has dried, sweep up the absorbent material. Then, wash away the remaining stain with water and soap. A small oil leak on your driveway is an indication that something is wrong with your car. Bring your car to Kelowna Auto Care to get the problem diagnosed. Do not ignore an oil leak as it can seriously affect your car’s engine.

Why is my car leaking a sweet-smelling fluid?

If there is a sweet-smelling fluid leaking from your car, the most likely culprit is leaking coolant or antifreeze. A coolant leak can become a serious problem. If your vehicle gets too low on coolant or antifreeze, it will overheat and may cause engine damage.

FAQs About Motor Oil

What are the 4 types of engine motor oil?

There are four basic classes of engine oil used in car maintenance today. Your owner’s manual will explain which type of motor oil your vehicle needs. It is important to always use the correct type of motor oil. The four types of motor oil are:

  • Conventional petroleum-based motor oil – This is the most common type of motor oil used in vehicles.
  • Synthetic motor oil – a lubricant made up of artificial chemical compounds derived by breaking down and rebuilding petroleum molecules.
  • Synthetic blend motor oil – a combination of common petroleum motor oil and synthetic motor oil.
  • High mileage oil – This type of motor oil is most commonly used in commercial vehicles and contains additives and seal enhancers that reduce leaks.

What are the steps for performing an oil change?

  1. Remove the plug and drain the old engine oil.
  2. Remove the old oil filter.
  3. Replace it with a new oil filter.
  4. Replace the plug and fill with new oil.
  5. Check to ensure that oil levels are correct.

FAQs About Oil Filters

What are the three types of oil filters?

  • Cellulose media filter – This is the most common type of disposable oil filter found in cars today.
  • Synthetic media filter – Made from high quality synthetic fibers, also catch and remove the smallest particulates and withstand complex chemical reactions better.
  • Micro glass media filters – High-end oil filters that include an extremely fine metal media or micro glass material.

How often should oil filters be changed?

Consult your owner’s manual to determine the maintenance interval for your vehicle’s oil filter. Some manufacturers recommend that the oil filter be replaced every time you get your oil changed while others recommend every other time.

Alignment
Wheel alignment (or simply alignment) is standard car maintenance that involves adjusting the angles of the wheels so that they are set to the manufacturer’s specifications. The main purpose is to let the suspension, and the steering systems operate at their desired angles – this reduces tire wear. Alignment is a complicated process, and not all mechanics get it right. To have experts handle your car’s alignment, visit Kelowna Auto Care Today.

Anti-Lock Brakes
Anti-lock brakes prevent wheel lock-up when rapidly decelerating by automatically modulating the brake pressure during an emergency stop. With this system, the wheels are able to maintain traction with the road while braking. Failure of the anti-lock brakes could lead to an increase in the risks of multiple vehicle crashes and run-off road crashes. To avoid this, have your anti-lock brake system checked and repaired by experts. At Kelowna Auto Care, we have anti-lock brake experts who will examine and repair your faulty ABS – keeping you safe.

Brake System Flush
Brake fluid is hygroscopic (it absorbs moisture). The absorbed moisture lowers the fluid’s boiling point. It also corrodes the lines and cylinders. With the lowered boiling point, the brake fluid could boil during braking which makes you lose braking ability. Although this is an extreme scenario, it does happen in heavy braking. To reduce the effects of the absorbed moisture, auto manufacturers recommend that you have a brake flush done periodically. A brake system flush involves the replacement of used and contaminated fluid with fresh fluid. With Kelowna Auto Care’s quick lube services, you will have a brake system flush performed by brake experts. Call250-860-8370or visit Kelowna Auto Care today.

Brakes
A brake is a mechanical device for slowing or stopping a vehicle (usually by means of friction). In short, a brake inhibits your car’s motion. It lets you stop the car whenever and wherever you choose. Brakes are one of the most important parts of a motor vehicle. Without them, you would not be able to stop the car. If your vehicle’s brakes are having issues, consider having them worked on. Brake experts at Kelowna Auto Care can work on your car’s brakes to ensure you have a safe drive.

Chassis
A chassis is the car’s internal framework that supports the body and other parts like the wheels, engine, transmission, driveshaft, differential, and suspension. A weak or damaged chassis will translate to a weak car. To have a strong and properly working vehicle, have your car’s chassis checked for defects. At Kelowna Auto Care, there are experienced undercar service providers who can work on your chassis.

Custom Exhaust
A motor vehicle exhaust system is piping used to guide exhaust gasses away from the engine to the outdoors. Although the exhaust system’s main purpose is to guide exhaust gases from the engine to the outdoors, it can be modified to increase engine power, reduce pollution, and reduce noise. Differential Flush
The differential is a car part that compensates for the difference in travel distance between the inner wheels and outer wheels when the vehicle is turning. Due to the differential’s position in most non-four-wheel-drive (FWD) vehicles (located at the rear and under the car), it does not get any of the star treatment the engine gets. The one thing that every car owner needs to know is thatfailure of the differential will mean failure of the car.

To save the differential from failure, you need to have differential fluid changed every 50,000 to 80,000 kilometers. Changing the oil on the differential is as important as changing the car’s engine oil. Although checking and changing differential oil is easy, you need to visit an auto shop to get a comprehensive differential flush. For differential flush services, visit or call Kelowna Auto Care today.

Differentials
The differential transfers the engine power to the wheels. One important function of the differential is to pass on power to the wheels while allowing them to rotate at different speeds – thus the name differential. When turning, the outer wheels travel a larger distance than the inner wheels do (also the front wheels travel a longer distance than the rear wheels). This means that all four wheels travel at different speeds during a turn and this is where the differential comes in to help. To make sure your vehicle’s differentials are working properly, have them checked regularly. Contact Kelowna Auto Care today for differentials examination and servicing.

Driveline
A driveline is a part of your motor vehicle that connects the engine and the transmission to the wheel axles. The driveline consists of the parts of the powertrain less the engine and transmission. Failure of the driveline means that the car would not move since energy cannot be transmitted from the engine to the wheel axles. Therefore, make sure that your car’s driveline is regularly inspected and serviced. And, at Kelowna Auto Care, you can have the driveline serviced by experts.

Exhaust
In a motor vehicle, an exhaust system is a piping used to guide exhaust fumes away from the engine – usually to the rear of the vehicle. A properly functioning exhaust system not only sounds better, but it is also better – for you, your car, and the environment. Kelowna Auto Care has expert technicians to service your car’s exhaust system.

Oil and Filter Changes

With Kelowna Auto Care’s quick lube services, you will have a oil change performed by engine experts. Call250-860-8370or visit Kelowna Auto Care today.

Shocks
Shocks (or shock absorbers) are mechanical devices designed to smooth out rough roads. The devices do this by converting kinetic energy to another form of energy. Properly working shocks reduce the effect of traveling over rough ground, leading to improved ride quality and vehicle handling. When shocks develop problems, driving on poorly leveled roads becomes unpleasant, and your vehicle may sway when turning. To have your vehicle’s shocks diagnosed and repaired, visit Kelowna Auto Care today.

Struts
Much like a shock absorber (shocks), your car’s struts provide a dampening effect as you travel over a road’s surface. By absorbing the shock of the road, struts allow passengers to ride in a car without constant and uncomfortable motion. Struts work a bit differently than shocks in that they provide structural support for your car’s suspension. This means that struts support your car’s weight, unlike shocks which only regulate the speed at which the weight is transferred. Struts usually last around 80,000 or 100,000 kilometers. This is simply because the damping characteristics of the parts gradually deteriorate over time. Call Kelowna Auto Care at 250-860-8370 if you have questions about the struts on your car. Our expert technicians will diagnose any problems and help you make an informed decision about repairs.

Tires
As tires get older, they lose traction and deteriorate from the inside out, increasing the likelihood of a tire bursting. This can cause a rapid loss of control of your vehicle. To have a better performing vehicle, you need to make sure the tires are in good condition. For all your tire needs, contact Kelowna Auto Care today.

FAQs About Suspensions

How often should shocks be replaced?

Experts recommend that shocks be replaced at 80,000-160,000 kilometers. If you are a more aggressive driver or frequently drive on rough roads, they will wear out faster. Shocks don’t go out all at once, they deteriorate slowly over time. If you are noticing problems with handling, making smooth turns or ride smoothness have one of the professionals at Kelowna Auto Care inspect your shocks.

Are struts difficult to replace?

Replacing struts is simple and fast for a professional. Replacing your front struts yourself is not recommended, especially if you need a new complete strut assembly kit. When you get your truck’s struts replaced you also need to have the front-end alignment checked. Ask the professionals at Kelowna Auto Care to replace your struts and we will complete the work quickly and easily.

What is the difference between shocks and struts?

Shocks and struts are both parts of a vehicle’s suspension system. However, each has a very specific job. Your vehicle has either shocks or struts. You cannot replace your shocks with struts and vice versa. Shock absorbers are hydraulic components that help minimize movement generated by the vehicle’s springs. These springs absorb some of the jolts you might feel from uneven or damaged roads. Struts are structural components of certain vehicles’ steering and suspension systems. They usually consist of a spring and a shock absorber. Struts are designed to be much stronger than shocks since they are designed for vehicles that carry heavy loads.

Is it necessary to get an alignment after strut replacement?

Kelowna Auto Care recommends performing an alignment anytime shocks, struts or other steering and suspension components are replaced. Getting your vehicle’s alignment within factory specifications ensures optimal tire wear and helps prolong the life of your tires.

What happens if I only replace one strut or shock?

If you replace only one shock or strut, it will create poor handling when changing lanes or driving over bumps. If your car is new, replacing only one strut or shock absorber may be ok since the opposite side shock is not worn out yet. Generally, Kelowna Auto Care recommends replacing both shocks or struts.

DIFFERENTIAL FAQS

Is it necessary to change front and rear differential fluid?

Over time, the differential fluid breaks down and becomes dirty and impacts performance. It is necessary to have your car or truck’s differential serviced regularly. It is generally recommended to have the differential fluid changed every 60,000 to 100,000 kilometers. However, if you are a more aggressive driver you may need to get your front and rear differential fluid changed sooner. If you are in Kelowna, BC or the surrounding area, give us a call and we can help you figure out what makes the most sense for your vehicle.

What is front and rear differential service?

Differential services performed by one of the professional technicians at Kelowna Auto Care usually includes draining the old fluid from the differentials and replacing it with new fluid according to the vehicle manufacturer’s recommendations and specifications. Sometimes other components surrounding the differential may need to be serviced as well.

Q&A About Warning Lights

Q: Why does my car keep saying the coolant level is low?

A: If a low coolant warning light is on do not continue to drive and go directly to the auto repair shop. It is simple and often inexpensive to fix at Kelowna Auto Care.

Waiting to get the problem resolved can result in high-cost engine repairs. If the low coolant warning light continues to flash on, then there is a leak in the car’s cooling system. Coolant fluid can leak in several ways. First, external leaks from radiator hoses, second, connections between hoses, or lastly, from the radiator itself. Your car’s radiator cap may leak due to a faulty seal on the cap which can be easily resolved by a specialist at our shop.

Q: Why Is My Car’s ABS Light On?

A: An Anti-Lock Braking System or ABS warning light on your dash indicates something in your car’s ABS needs to be checked out by a qualified mechanic. Your ABS is one of your most important safety systems. Do not ignore this warning light. Common issues are:

  1. Malfunctioning ABS module
  2. Low levels in the brake fluid reservoir
  3. Broken speed sensor
  4. The ABS system is not receiving power

Q: How do I fix a persistent traction control warning light?

A: Normally, when the traction control light comes on while driving it indicates the car’s traction control lost grip or traction going around a sharp curve or while driving on wet pavement. However, sometimes the traction control warning light will come on and stay on.

The best way to determine whether it was just a fluke, or a real issue is to shut your vehicle off and turn it back on. If the light is off, then it was likely a temporary malfunction. If the light does not reset, come by Kelowna Auto Care and let us fix it.

Q: Why is my throttle control warning light on?

A: The connection between the gas pedal and acceleration is controlled by your car’s throttle. The amount of acceleration or throttle control is governed by a sophisticated computer system. Any disruption of the electrical signals will affect your vehicle’s acceleration and cause the throttle control warning light to come on. If your throttle control light comes on go directly to Kelowna Auto Care on Banks Road.

Q: What are the main problems that cause a throttle control warning light to come on?

A: The five main issues are:

  • Irregular or dangerous unintended acceleration
  • Intermittent loss of throttle control
  • Sudden drop in fuel economy
  • Hesitation or stumbling when accelerating.
  • Engine stuck unable to accelerate beyond a fast idle.

Q: Can I drive with the throttle control light on?

A: No, unwanted acceleration may occur and cause an accident. Go straight to the repair shop. There can be many different causes for the throttle control warning light, many are simple fixes.

Breaks

At Kelowna Auto Care, we want our customers to have the opportunity to feel comfortable in their vehicle. You can leave the repairs and services to our professionals, but please don’t hesitate to ask us questions about why a service is needed or how it occurred. Give us a call at 250-860-8370, and we will be happy to speak with you. Here is some valuable information on brake issues and corrective services Kelowna Auto Care offers.

Anti-Lock Brake System
Anti-lock Brake Systems (ABS) ensure that the wheels don’t stop rotating during braking, preventing the car from skidding and offering greater control. If your ABS light comes on, visit Kelowna Auto Care where we will be happy to diagnose and fix the problem.

Brake Fluid Flushes
Brake fluid will absorb water from the air over time, causing the brake system to become less effective and the fluid to become corrosive, possibly damaging the system. It is important to perform a brake fluid flush regularly to ensure that your vehicle is using fresh fluid. Talk to our technicians at Kelowna Auto Care about when it’s time for a brake fluid flush.

Brake Hoses
A brake hose is a tube carrying pressurized brake fluid from the master cylinder to the brakes. A crushed hose can cause a lagged or slow brake, and a leak in the hose can cause the brake, or the entire brake system, to fail. These don’t need to be replaced often, but should be replaced at the first sign of cracking or wear.

Brake Pad & Shoe Replacement
Brake pad problems can usually be identified by squealing brakes. If your brake pads deteriorate completely, you’ll hear a grinding metal-on-metal sound when braking, meaning that it’s too late and you’re ruining your rotors or drums! Those with knowledge of auto repair may be able to fix this at home, but you should always see an auto repair professional immediately if you have brake problems, call us at 250-860-8370.

Caliper Replacement
The brake caliper houses your brake pads and fits around the rotor like a clamp, pressing the pads against the rotor when you brake. A brake caliper problem could cause uneven braking, making your car slide forward when you brake. Uneven braking can also cause your vehicle to slide out of control in bad weather conditions, so contact Kelowna Auto Care as soon as possible.

Resurface Rotors
In a disc brake system, rotors are attached to your vehicle’s wheels. When the brake pads grip the rotor, they bring both the rotor and wheels to a stop. However, the friction causes grooves and cracks to appear over time. Resurfacing brings the rotor back to a “like-new” condition, reducing squealing and wobbling. Kelowna Auto Care will give your rotors a thorough inspection and recommend your best course of action.

FAQs

What percent of brake pad life is 3mm?

When you purchase a new brake pad, it has a standard thickness of around 8 to 12 mm or about a half inch. Over time, your car’s brake pad will wear away. A brake pad at 3 mm or around one tenth (1/10) of an inch will take around 60,000 kilometers of driving to completely wear out. Don’t wait until then to replace your brake pads. Once your brake pads reach 3 mm it is recommended that you schedule an appointment to get them replaced soon.

Why is my dashboard brake light on?

If the brake light indicator appears on your dashboard, it’s either time for regular brake maintenance or an alert to a potential problem. Stop by Kelowna Auto Care and let us help you diagnose this issue quickly.

What is the 30-30-30 rule for brakes?

Brake specialists advise initiating new brake pads by using a 30-45-30 method: Perform 30 gradual stops from 45 kph, allowing 30 seconds between each stop for the brakes to cool. This process protects against excessive heat buildup until the resins in the pads have completely cured.

Why are my brakes squeaking?

Noises coming from your brakes do not usually indicate a high-cost auto repair. It could be a foreign object such as a small stone or road debris. It could also be a signal that your brake-pads are wearing out and need replacing. As brake pads wear bits of metal in your brake pad meet the rotor to create a squeaking noise when you apply the brakes.

Why are my brakes making a grinding noise?

Grinding noises usually indicate that your car’s brake system is overdue for maintenance. The grinding sound is usually caused by the brake pad being completely worn away or the brake shoe scraping on metal contact points. At this stage, safety is of issue, contact us at Kelowna Auto Care as soon as possible.

Why are my brakes vibrating?

If your car shakes or vibrates or wobbles when you apply the brakes, it indicates that the thickness of your rotor is uneven. Brake rotors are large, perfectly round, smooth metal discs that sit inside of the wheels. When the disc has become misshapen or unevenly worn it will vibrate or wobble when you hit the brakes. Left uneven, the material will continue to build on the uneven spots, making the problem worse over time. Come to Kelowna Auto Care to get the face of your car’s brake rotors resurfaced to fix the problem.

How do I know if my car is leaking brake fluid?

If your car does not stop as quickly as you expect you may be leaking brake fluid. This is a serious problem. An important part of the braking process involves brake fluid, which is used to create hydraulic pressure against the brake caliper. If your vehicle is leaking brake fluid, you won’t be able to stop safely. We recommend coming into Kelowna Auto Care as quickly as possible if it is leaking brake fluid.

Why is my car pulling to one side when I am braking?

If your car is pulling to one side when braking it may be a bad brake hose or a caliper issue causing one brake to engage while the other is not. This causes a pull on the side where the brake is working properly.

Why are my brakes making a burning smell?

Overheated brakes cause a noticeable burning chemical smell. Pull over to a safe place and allow the brakes to cool. Ensure you did not accidentally leave the parking brake on. If there’s any smoke coming from a wheel, it may be that the brake caliper is malfunctioning and locked in place. In this case, it may be unsafe to continue driving.

What are the 3 signs that brake pads are worn?

The three most common sounds that indicate you need to replace your brake pads are squeaking, grinding or the dashboard brake indicator light coming on.

What are the 3 types of brake pads?

There are three main types of brake pads in use today: non-asbestos organic, ceramic and semi-metallic. Come by Kelowna Auto Care or consult your car’s owner’s manual to determine which type is best for your vehicle.

To have experts handle your car’s alignment, visit Kelowna Auto Repair.

FAQs

How long does a full alignment take?

A wheel alignment usually takes about an hour for both two-wheel and four-wheel drive vehicles. However, if there is significant wear and tear on suspension components like bushings, track rods, or the alignment system itself, replacement parts may be needed, which could extend the service time.

What happens if you wait too long for an alignment?

Delaying a wheel alignment can negatively affect your tire performance and lifespan along with additional wear and tear on other components. Even slight misalignments, which are imperceptible to the eye but measurable in small degrees or fractions of an inch, can cause uneven and premature tire wear. Over time, this wear becomes more noticeable, impacting safety and fuel efficiency. To prevent these issues, it’s recommended to have your alignment checked every 10,000 kilometres.

What is checked during an alignment?

During a tire alignment, three key angles are examined: camber, toe, and caster. Camber refers to the angle between the vertical axis of the tire and a line perpendicular to the road surface when viewed from the front. If the top of the tire tilts inward, creating an “X” shape between the wheels, it’s known as negative camber, which can cause excessive wear on the inner edge of the tire due to increased friction.

Do I need an alignment after replacing tires?

Yes, you do! Proper wheel alignment ensures that the angles between your tires and the road surface are accurate, which helps to maximize tire life, improve handling, and ensure even tread wear. This not only boosts fuel efficiency and driving safety but also enhances your overall driving experience.

Don’t let uneven tire wear diminish the longevity of your tires. Experience a fast and cost-effective tire alignment at our shop in Kelowna, BC.
